How to Use Twitter : A Basic Guide on Going From Beginner to Pro

If you still don't know how to use Twitter and it sounds like Chinese to you, you're in luck! In this post, I have listed 8 simple tips that will help you understand Twitter and use it like a veteran and thus get the most out of one of the most popular social networks of our times.

Let's go for it!

Twitter is the microblogging social networking site par excellence and in it, users can send messages of a maximum of 140 characters called tweets.

You may not know that today it is not enough to be on Twitter and tweet for the sake of it. If you are considering using this social network either for your company or to work on your brand, you need to have a good strategy that allows you to connect with new audiences and their corresponding needs. The point to keep in mind is, there are millions of accounts on Twitter, you need to be original and unique to stand apart.

Tips to mastering the art of Twitter and using it professionally

Why do I want to be on Twitter?

The first step is to find your purpose concerning this social networking site. There are many possibilities it offers: creating and promoting your brand, networking with professionals in your sector, finding clients, familiarizing yourself with your competition, looking for a job, or simply keeping up to date with everything that is “being talked about”.

Once the decision is made, start working on your strategy.

Find a good username

Username is your representation on the platform. The shorter,  simpler,  and more serious your username is, the better. Remember that if you are going to use Twitter as a tool to promote your brand, the name becomes a key piece in this puzzle.

They should know you by the same name and your account should represent what you want to promote. For this reason, nicknames are better reserved for a more personal environment.

Get it right with your profile and header photos

Although it may seem not important, it is rather a deciding factor.

The size of your profile picture should be 400x400px and should be recognized easily. The way forwards to choose a picture is to pick a photo of the face, one that is natural and, smiling (why not?!). It is a general mindset of the people to be informed of whom they are interacting with. The wise have told, ‘pictures are worth a thousand words.’

The dimensions of the header photo must be 1500x500px  The dimensions are more important here because an image that is too small could lose quality. The header photo should represent what you want to convey with your brand. A custom image with graphic details or representative keywords would be a great choice.

There are very useful and free tools like  Canva or  Piktochart, with which you can easily create customized header photos.

Nail your Personal description.

With regards to personal information be clear, direct, and most importantly, original. If you have a brand message, use it and if not, you can use a phrase that identifies with you particularly. The key here is to be distinct.

It is also good that you highlight your interests and your field of work using a hashtag (#) but without going overboard, 2-3 hashtags are generally acceptable.

In this section, include the URL of your website or your blog as it is an excellent way to get traffic.

What and how to tweet

This the heart of the strategy, the door to your success. Firstly, remember there is character limitation (140) so you have to be precise and to the point. In case, you want to include links, the best way is to shorten your links using link shorteners This will give you space and optimize your tweets at the same time, keep track of your statistics.

You can share articles from your blog or articles from industry references that could be of interest to your audience. If you also add images to your tweets, the chances of capturing the attention of users get better.

Apart from sharing interesting content for your community, you can "ask" for their participation through surveys. This option is available when you compose a new tweet. All you have to do is ask the question in question, add different answer options, and set the duration of the survey.

This type of content is very attractive to users and it is also a very interesting way of knowing their opinion first-hand. In the same way, you must participate and interact with your community.

If you share third-party content, remember to mention the author, and if they retweet, mention, or share your content, tell them a big thank you.

Finally, remember that if you are going to use Twitter professionally, you must take care of the spellings and maintain its tone.  You need to have a way of writing, or I must say, tweeting, that is authentic, transparent, and largely positive (the world always needs positivity)

Pin a tweet

This option allows you to highlight a specific tweet on your timeline and avoid getting lost among the thousands of messages shared daily.

Thanks to it, you can make a tweet visible to all users who visit your profile without having to tweet it over and over again.

It is very useful when you want to share something, such as a new article on your blog, an upcoming event, etc.

The option to pin tweet is on the upper-right side of your tweets.

Use tools

There are useful tools to go a mile further when managing one (or more) Twitter accounts. With them, the reach and impact of your campaigns on Twitter can be considerably improved.

There are several types of tools :

-management and monitoring such as Hootsuite or TweetDeck,

-to  analyze your audiences- Tweepi, Audiense, or ManageFlitter,

-to  schedule tweets-  Buffer or Metricool,

for  content curation- Feedly or Storify,

-analytical tools such as Twitter Analytics, will allow us to improve our results on this social networking site.

These are just a few examples. The idea is to try and find those tools with which you feel most comfortable and best suit your needs. You can delve into this topic if you’re interested. There are plenty of resources available.

Now you no longer have an excuse to avoid using this wonderful social network that can open so many doors for you and your business.

I request you to put into practice what is mentioned here and tell me about your experience. If you also have any ideas or suggestions, do not hesitate from doing so.
